Day 2, Sunday 9th August, and we’re lucky enough to have a second piece of music from Buckden Singers today. You might wonder why we might feature the national anthem of a country not our own, but as Anne explains below, the words have particular resonance.

National Anthem of South Africa

Nkosi sikelel’ Afrika
Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo
Yizwa imithandazo
Nkosi sikelela
Lusapho lwayo

God bless Africa
May her glory be lifted high,
Hear our petitions
Lord bless us, your children.
Lord we ask You to protect our nation,
Intervene and end all conflicts,
Protect us, protect our nation,
Protect South Africa, South Africa.

There are no definitive words or translation to this beautiful and moving National Anthem of a strife-riven country.

The version we sing contains words from the Xhosa, Zulu, and Sesotho languages but the sentiments are clear: that people of different tribes, nationalities, colours and creeds should live together in peace and harmony.
